Ukrainian forces strike Russian command in Kursk region
The Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out a precise attack on a Russian command post in the Kursk region, which has been partly controlled by Kyiv since August 2024. The objective, as stated by the Ukrainian army, was to weaken Russia's capacity to execute terrorist acts against Ukrainian civilians.
The Ukrainian army targeted the Russian command post situated in the village of Maryino, within the Kursk region.
The General Staff of Ukraine reported that the attack was executed with measures taken to minimize threats to civilians. "These strikes disrupt the ability of the Russian Federation to conduct terrorism against innocent Ukrainian civilians," the statement emphasized.
Situation in the Kursk region
Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region on August 6, 2024, aiming to compel the Russians to redirect some forces from Donbas. By the end of August, Kyiv controlled approximately 1,243 square kilometres of this region; however, since September, Ukrainian forces have been losing ground to the Russian counteroffensive. By November, they controlled only about 800 square kilometres.
According to Western sources, Russians in the Kursk region are bolstered by more than 10,000 soldiers from North Korea. The General Staff of Ukraine announced additional measures destined to identify and destroy Russian military command facilities.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue operations to seek and destroy the military command of the Russian terrorist regime," the statement highlighted.
