Ukraine's Merezhko nominates Trump for Nobel peace prize

Oleksandr Merezhko, a member of Ukraine's Servant of the People party, nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Merezhko, chairman of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, wrote in a letter to the Nobel Committee that Trump "has made a significant contribution to world peace and will be able to do more in the future."

Merezhko's decision sparked mixed reactions. Some politicians accuse Trump of having close ties with Vladimir Putin and criticize his opposition to military aid for Ukraine. Others believe he can be persuaded to support Kyiv in the face of Russian aggression. Critics worry that his promises of a quick end to the war could mean pressuring Ukraine to cede some of its territories to Moscow.

In his letter, Merezhko recalled Trump's mediation during his presidency between Israel and Muslim countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan. The MP also emphasized Trump's decision to provide Ukraine with anti-tank Javelin missiles, which he believes laid the foundation for today's international coalition of support for Ukraine.

In a conversation with the "Kyiv Independent," Merezhko explained that his goal was to draw Trump's attention to Ukraine's situation. He hoped the former US president would pursue solutions aligned with international law, including respecting Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Ukrainian politician was not the first

Although the Ukrainian politician is the first to take formal steps to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, he is not the first to come up with the idea. As early as the beginning of November, Alexander Lukashenko expressed such willingness, referencing Trump's campaign promise to end the war in Ukraine.
