U.S. halts military hardware to Ukraine, sustains intel support
The United States has halted deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine. However, they continue to provide intelligence and satellite support.
The United States has decided to pause the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine. Nevertheless, intelligence, satellite support, and communication remain uninterrupted.
A source linked to the Pentagon highlighted that the United States remains committed to providing Ukraine with intelligence, satellite imagery, and access to the Starlink communication system. The informant warned that any disruption in this support would immediately and significantly impact Ukrainian forces at the front lines.
Intelligence and satellite support. Ukraine maintains it from the USA
The decision to suspend support involves much equipment intended for Ukraine. President Trump has not yet approved any new weapons package for Ukraine, but until Monday, he permitted the flow of weapons under previous packages announced by Joe Biden.
In December and January, President Biden announced the purchase of two packages of equipment from American stockpiles, worth a total of CAN$2.3 billion, and the purchase of equipment for Ukraine, valued at CAN$1.6 billion, under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). So far, about one-third of the weapons from the PDA packages have been delivered, and further deliveries could take several months.
It is unclear whether the pause affects the USAI program, through which Ukraine was to acquire most of the ammunition for air defence systems. Once the contract for weapon purchase is signed, the weapons become Ukraine's property, but authorities can use legal provisions to redirect or revise the deliveries.
Last year, the Biden administration prioritized the delivery of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, delaying other orders. Contract fulfillment generally takes many months.
