Trump's Ukraine pledge falters amid diplomatic discord
U.S. President Donald Trump makes a "misstep" regarding the war in Ukraine, states a columnist for the Italian daily "Corriere della Sera" in Monday's edition. This refers to Trump's promise, which he did not fulfill.
U.S. President Donald Trump promised a quick resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, which - according to "Corriere della Sera" - turned out to be a "misstep". Columnist Paolo Mieli emphasizes that Trump's promises were merely boasting, and the situation in Ukraine is more complicated.
Mieli notes that the "hand extended by Trump to the Russians was met with scornful, mocking reactions from Moscow" and the tough conditions it imposed.
According to the columnist of the Italian daily, "Europe is essentially deaf to what the 'joint pursuit of peace' in Ukraine by Trump and Putin will bring." The author also notes that according to the "Financial Times", some American diplomats have called for Ukraine to be excluded from the decision to freeze arms supplies abroad, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"But even if Rubio decided to address this and listen to the advice of diplomats, such 'forgetting' cannot go unnoticed," the author of the commentary believes. He adds that in his opinion it is the "first signal of concession, which Trump tried to hide, saying he was happy that Putin agreed to talk to him."
"It's surreal," the columnist concludes.
