According to reports, Trump spoke with Putin about this matter during a telephone conversation in February. A few days later, this proposal was to be discussed in greater detail during US-Russian negotiations in Saudi Arabia.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with Bloomberg that "Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations". He added, Moscow "is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this".

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked whether Russia would mediate the talks with the USA and replied that assistance from other countries is "natural".

The talks in Riyadh, which took place on February 18th, were the first high-level meeting between US and Russian delegations since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. No specific decisions were announced after the talks concluded; there were only declarations of willingness to cooperate between the USA and Russia in various areas.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the talks in Riyadh were a preliminary step, not official negotiations, and that Ukraine and Europe would participate when formal discussions begin.

On February 12th, US President Donald Trump said he expects a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, possibly in Saudi Arabia, but did not specify when this might occur.
