Trump arrives in Washington; his inauguration breaks tradition
President-elect Donald Trump, who will succeed outgoing president Joe Biden, arrived in Washington on Sunday, a day before his inauguration, Reuters reported. The future president of the United States arrived by plane, which was arranged for him by Biden.
Trump departed from Palm Beach, Florida, where he was preparing to assume office. He was accompanied by his wife, Melania, daughter Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner.
After arriving, Trump attended a celebration at his golf club near Washington in honour of the inauguration. The event included a fireworks display and a performance by singer Leon Days, who impersonates Elvis Presley.
First time in 40 years
On Sunday, the 78-year-old Trump was scheduled to speak at a support rally at the Capital One Arena on the outskirts of Washington. Another event is planned for Monday, where he will celebrate his victory in the November 5 election.
Due to low temperatures in the United States, the inaugural ceremony was moved to the Capitol Rotunda. The parade, originally intended to pass along Pennsylvania Avenue, will take place at the Capital One Arena. This marks the first time in 40 years that the inauguration will not occur on the Capitol steps. The last time this happened was during Ronald Reagan's second term in January 1985.
Trump will be sworn in on Monday. Following the swearing-in, he will deliver an address in which presidents traditionally set the tone for their term. In an interview with NBC News, Trump stated that the motto of his speech would be "community and strength, and the word justice."
