Tragic plunge: Four dead as bus falls into St. Petersburg river
A dramatic accident in St. Petersburg: a bus plunges into a river. The vehicle quickly sank.
The crash occurred at about 6 a.m. ET on Bolszaja Morskaja Street in the heart of St. Petersburg. Surveillance footage captured when the bus driver lost control before reaching the bridge. The video shows the bus swerving onto the sidewalk, breaking through barriers to rejoin the roadway, and then steering onto the bridge, colliding with an oncoming car.
Consequently, the 20-passenger bus veered off the bridge and submerged underwater.
Ten passengers managed to escape the bus alone, taking refuge on the vehicle's roof as they awaited rescue.
Four people did not survive the accident
Another ten individuals were rescued from the bus by emergency crews. Nine of these, including the driver, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
One individual, despite attempts at resuscitation, was pronounced dead at the accident site. Three others succumbed to their injuries after being hospitalized.
Online images and videos vividly depict rescue teams' urgent efforts to save the trapped bus passengers.
The prosecutorial office has commenced an investigation into the incident. Currently, the bus driver remains the sole suspect.
