The unpleasant smell from the drain is common in kitchens and bathrooms. The primary source of this phenomenon is food scraps, fats, and deposits that accumulate in the drain pipes. In the warm, humid environment inside the drain, these residues decompose, promoting the growth of bacteria and microorganisms.

The decay of pollutants leads to the release of unpleasant hydrogen sulfide compounds and other gases, which cause the stench. Additionally, if the drain is not regularly flushed and cleaned, deposits can settle on the walls of the pipes, exacerbating the problem even further.

One of the most effective methods for getting rid of an unpleasant drain odour is to use a dishwasher pod. This small but powerful mixture of detergents works well not only in the dishwasher but also in the kitchen drain.

To harness the pod's power, dissolve it in about 500 millilitres of hot water and pour the resulting solution into the drain. As the liquid flows down the drain, it thoroughly cleans it, removing food residues and odour. After 20 minutes, rinse the sink with hot water.

Another clever trick is to use mouthwash. The substances contained in this preparation have bactericidal properties, which effectively counteract unpleasant odours. To eliminate this persistent problem, pour 250 millilitres of mouthwash into the drain and leave it overnight. In the morning, rinse the sink with lukewarm water, and you're done.

An alternative to dishwasher pods and mouthwash

One of the simplest and most effective home remedies for an unpleasant drain odour is to use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. This combination acts as an excellent odour neutralizer and cleaning agent. To use this method, simply pour 125 millilitres of baking soda into the drain and then pour the same amount of vinegar over it.

When these two ingredients are combined, an intense chemical reaction produces foam. In this form, the mixture penetrates the walls of the pipes, removing accumulated food residues and deposits. After waiting about 15 minutes, thoroughly rinse the drain with hot water to remove impurities and unpleasant odour. This method, once a week, keeps the system clean and neutralizes unpleasant odours.
