South Korea issues renewed warrant for president Yoon's arrest
The court in Seoul has issued another arrest warrant for the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, who is accused of staging a coup. Previous attempts to detain the politician were unsuccessful.
The office investigating corruption among high-ranking officials (CIO) announced that a renewed arrest warrant for the suspect was issued earlier this afternoon (local time).
It was not disclosed how long the warrant would be valid. The court issued the first warrant on December 31, but attempts to detain Yoon on January 3 failed. Presidential security prevented investigators from entering the politician's residence, citing a legal debate surrounding the warrant.
The CIO sought assistance from Acting President Choi Sang Mok and the police but did not receive support before the warrant expired. Yoon's defenders tried to nullify the arrest and search warrant for the residence, but the court in Seoul rejected their request.
further actions and the President's hiding
The CIO and police are committed to taking more decisive action to arrest Yoon. However, the situation is complicated as the politician has been hiding in his residence since December 12. Last weekend, presidential security installed barbed wire near the gate and hills close to the residence.
