South Korea invests 479.8 billion won in iron dome-inspired defence
South Korea will allocate 479.8 billion won for the development of a missile defence system modelled after Israel's "Iron Dome," the South Korean arms agency DAPA reported on Monday.
The government in Seoul plans to invest 479.8 billion won (approximately 450 million CAD) by 2028 in developing a missile defence system inspired by Israel's "Iron Dome." This project aims to protect against missiles from North Korea.
The development of the LAMD system involves the Defense Development Agency and defence companies such as LIG Nex1 Co., Hanwha Aerospace Co., and Hanwha Systems Co. This system is intended to be more advanced than the Israeli equivalent, enabling a simultaneous response to a larger number of targets.
Protection of key areas
LAMD is designed to protect government and military facilities in the capital region, which is within reach of North Korean artillery and missile systems. This region is home to nearly half of South Korea's 51-million population. Kim Jong Un has repeatedly threatened an attack on Seoul, highlighting the need to strengthen defence.
