A salmon casserole is an excellent choice if you're looking for something special that's also easy to make. The combination of tender fish, creamy sauce, and a crispy crust on top is a true feast for the senses. It's perfect for a family dinner, a meal with friends, or even a romantic evening. Moreover, the ingredients are easily accessible, and the dish can be tailored to your taste preferences.

Why is salmon casserole a hit?

Salmon casserole elegantly combines flavours and textures. The delicacy of the salmon, combined with a creamy sauce and a crispy cheese layer, creates a dish that delights from the first bite. Moreover, this dish is incredibly versatile—you can prepare it for a regular dinner or more special occasions. It's perfect for family gatherings, parties, or a romantic dinner. Salmon is also a source of valuable omega-3 fatty acids, making the casserole tasty and healthy.

Recipe for salmon casserole

Salmon casserole is a great idea for a tasty family dinner. It's prepared relatively quickly and easily, allowing you to successfully make a larger portion and reheat it the next day.

Ingredients:

  • About 300 grams of fresh salmon (skinless fillet),
  • About 450 grams of potatoes,
  • 1 onion (diced),
  • About 200 millilitres of heavy cream,
  • About 100 grams of creamy cheese (e.g., mascarpone or cream cheese),
  • 1 tablespoon butter,
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice,
  • About 100 grams of grated cheese (e.g., mozzarella, gouda, or cheddar),
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced),
  • Salt and pepper to taste,
  • Fresh dill or parsley for garnish,
  • Breadcrumbs for topping (optional).

Preparation:

  1. Start by peeling and slicing the potatoes thinly. Cook the potatoes in a pot of salted water for about 8-10 minutes until they are soft but not falling apart. Drain and set aside to cool.
  2. Cut the salmon fillet into smaller pieces and drizzle with lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper and set aside a few minutes so the fish can absorb the seasonings. You can also add a bit of olive oil for a delicate flavour.
  3. Heat the butter in a pan, then add the finely chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until golden. Add the cream and creamy cheese (e.g., mascarpone), stirring until all ingredients combine to form a smooth, creamy sauce—season with salt and pepper to taste. The sauce should be slightly thick and aromatic.
  4. Layer the potatoes in a greased baking dish, then add the salmon pieces and pour the creamy sauce over everything. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used.
  5. Sprinkle the casserole with grated cheese, creating a beautiful, crispy crust. For added crunch, you can also sprinkle the casserole with breadcrumbs.
  6. Place the casserole in an oven preheated to 180°C and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese melts and the top is golden and crispy.
  7. Remove the finished casserole from the oven, sprinkle with fresh dill or parsley, and serve hot. It pairs excellently with an arugula salad or other fresh vegetables.

Additional tips:

  1. You can add your favourite vegetables to the casserole, such as broccoli, zucchini, or spinach, to enhance its flavour and add even more nutritional value.
  2. If you don't have salmon, you can try the casserole with another fish, such as cod or trout. Each of these fish will give the casserole a different but equally delicious taste.
  3. If you want to save time, you can use pre-sliced potatoes or even cooked pasta as a base for the casserole. This will speed up the preparation, and the dish will still be delicious.
