Revival of the Sbarro Super Eight: A slice of 80s automotive history
The 1980s were a golden era for car tuning. One of the most remarkable projects from that time is the Sbarro Super Eight, which has recently reappeared on the market after a long absence.
The Sbarro Super Eight is a unique model created by the Swiss tuning company Sbarro and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1984. The company, unrelated to the pizza chain of the same name, became famous for creating original and intriguing concepts.
The car has a fibreglass body designed from scratch, concealing the chassis and powertrain of a Ferrari 308 GTB. A transversely mounted, naturally aspirated 3.0-litre V8 engine is located in the cabin under a special cover, on which a spare wheel is mounted. A five-speed manual dogleg gearbox transfers power to the rear wheels. The vehicle is equipped with disc brakes and double wishbone suspension on both axles.
The interior retains many elements from the Ferrari 308, including switches and the characteristic gearshift gate. Even the steering column comes from the original and includes the Ferrari VIN number.
The Super Eight is being auctioned in Paris through Bring a Trailer. It was last for sale four years ago in Belgium, where its price was equivalent to about 246,000 CAD. At that time, it had just under 27,000 kilometres on the clock, now showing about 30,000 kilometres. The car still looks almost perfect, which could translate into a similar or even higher price than last time.
If you are an enthusiast of unique tuning projects from the '80s, the Sbarro Super Eight is an opportunity not to be missed.
