Dreaming of an unusual hedge? Forget about the clichéd arborvitae. Choose a plant that grows even faster and is much easier to care for.

Arborvitae are popular coniferous plants that adorn many parks and gardens. They become large enough to protect the property from prying eyes a few years after planting. There is an alternative to them. It turns out that the cypress grows even faster. Here’s how to care for it.

Plant instead of arborvitae. You won’t regret it

Arborvitae, also known as thuja, are plants from the cypress family. They originate from Asia but can quickly grow in our conditions. They don’t require much work, so many people plant them in their gardens.

Few people realize that their shoots contain a toxic substance called thujone. It poses a risk to both humans and animals.

Thujone present in arborvitae is toxic and comes in two forms (alpha and beta). Both isomeric forms show toxic effects and can lead to symptoms of nervous system poisoning. In severe cases, seizures may even occur.

What to replace arborvitae with? The best choice is cypress. It is characterized by its intense, vivid green colour and dense shoots. It is resistant to low temperatures and pests. Properly cared for, it can reach a height of up to 4 metres.

How to care for cypress?

Cypress is very easy to care for. It needs a sunny location but can also cope with partial shade. The shrub does not have special soil requirements. It can be planted both in sandy and clayey soil with a slightly acidic reaction.

Due to its developed root system, it does not need to be watered frequently. It is enough to water it during periods of severe drought. It proliferates, so when planting, you should keep at least a distance of 50 centimetres.

Frequent fertilization is not necessary. The plant should be fertilized only during its intensive growth period in spring. Both ready-made fertilizers and homemade ones, such as from coffee grounds or yeast, are suitable. Use them once a month, and the cypress will reward you with a beautiful appearance.
