Putin's denial of Ukraine's existence fuels ongoing conflict
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiha, highlighted Putin's denial of Ukraine's right to exist as the main cause of the war. This statement came in response to the U.S. Secretary of State's call for the UN to adopt the American version of the resolution on Ukraine.
"The root causes of this war are Putin's denial of Ukraine's right to exist and his wish to destroy our nation—a genocidal goal backed by Russians. This is why Russia started this war, commits atrocities, and tries to change borders by force. So yes, let’s remove the root causes," wrote Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha in his statement.
Sybiha reacted this way to an appeal from U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who urged UN countries to adopt the American version of the resolution on Ukraine.
Rubio calls on UN countries to adopt the American resolution on Ukraine
The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, appealed to UN member states to adopt a "simple and historic" resolution on Ukraine, proposed by Washington. This project, prepared on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, aims to compete with the text proposed by Ukraine and its European allies.
The U.S. resolution calls for a swift end to the conflict and the establishment of lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia. Russia has proposed an amendment to include the "elimination of the original causes" of the conflict.
The Russian authorities described the U.S. resolution as a "good step" and announced that if their amendment is accepted by the General Assembly, Moscow will vote for the resolution.
