Polish arrest deals major setback to Russian intelligence plot
Polish services have arrested 44-year-old Aleksander B., dealing the most significant blow to Russian military intelligence, the GRU, in three years, reports "Gazeta Wyborcza."
The arrest of Aleksander B. by Polish services is a significant blow to Russian military intelligence, the GRU. According to "Gazeta Wyborcza", the 44-year-old Russian coordinated a secret operation in Warsaw in August 2024. The operation aimed to investigate the routes of courier shipments to the USA and Canada and the security measures used along the way.
According to the prosecution, the operation aimed to prepare for a terrorist act. Russian intelligence planned to send explosives and flammable materials overseas. Information gathered by Polish services indicates that Aleksandr B. might have been a GRU agent.
Russia's desperate attempt
It was emphasized that "he was so valuable to the Russians that they made a desperate attempt to save him from extradition to Poland." "Russia submitted its own—competitive to the Polish—extradition request, justifying it with the need to try him in the country for alleged crimes. However, the court in Bosnia and Herzegovina decided to extradite him to Poland, not Russia," reports "Gazeta Wyborcza."
