Onion pancakes are the perfect dish for a quick, cheap, and delicious dinner that we can prepare with almost basic ingredients that we usually have at home.

Why should you try onion pancakes?

Onion pancakes are an exciting alternative to classic potato pancakes and a way to introduce more vegetables into your diet. Although often underrated, onions are rich in vitamin C, B6, and antioxidants, supporting our immune system and helping fight inflammation. Furthermore, onions are incredibly inexpensive and easily accessible, making onion pancakes an exceptionally budget-friendly dish.

Onion pancakes can be prepared traditionally or enriched with various additions such as herbs, cheese, or spices that enhance the flavour and add character to them. This makes them a versatile dish that we can serve for dinner, supper, or as an appetizer at friends' gatherings.

How to make onion pancakes?

Preparing onion pancakes is quick and simple. We only need a few basic ingredients. The key to success is the proper preparation of the onion—we need to grate it and drain the excess juice to make the pancakes crispy.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions,
  • 2 eggs,
  • 3 tablespoons of flour,
  • salt to taste,
  • pepper to taste,
  • oil for frying.

Onion pancakes are an excellent example of how cheap and simple ingredients can become the base for incredibly tasty dishes. The onion gives them a delicate sweetness, and once correctly fried, it becomes pleasantly crispy. This dish works both in the classic version and with herbs or spices such as paprika, garlic, or thyme, which will enhance its flavour.

Preparation:

  1. Peel the onion and grate it using a grater with large holes. Drain the excess water from the onion, then transfer it to a bowl.
  2. Add eggs, flour, salt, and pepper until a uniform mass is achieved.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan and add portions of the batter, forming small pancakes.
  4. Fry until golden on both sides, then drain the excess fat using a paper towel.
