Matovič challenges Fico with bold diaper stunt amid gas tensions
Igor Matovič, the former Prime Minister of Slovakia, known for his controversial remarks, climbed the gate of the Prime Minister's office on Thursday. He hung a pack of diapers there intended for the current Prime Minister, Robert Fico. "Since the prime minister is scared to..., we brought him diapers so he can change and not be afraid to negotiate with Zelensky," stated Matovič.
On the morning of January 1st, the Russian energy giant Gazprom announced the cessation of gas exports to Europe through Ukraine's territory. This day marked the expiration of the gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine had previously refused to renew it.
Slovakia was one of the recipients of the gas flowing through Ukraine. Prime Minister Robert Fico even threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine in response to the halt of gas transit.
The opposition in Slovakia announced on Thursday their intention to submit a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Robert Fico. They accuse him primarily of strengthening ties with Russia and of inaction concerning the country's ongoing internal issues.
Brought diapers for Fico
On Thursday, a press conference was also held by former Prime Minister Igor Matovič. He bluntly stated that Prime Minister Robert Fico "is scared to death" and should "change," in order to be able to go to Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
"We brought him here, in front of the Prime Minister's office, diapers so he can change, put them on, and go to Kyiv for negotiations with President Zelensky," said Matovič.
On Monday, Fico sent a letter to Zelensky, inviting him for talks. Zelensky's response was brief: "OK. Come to Kyiv on Friday."
When asked about a possible meeting with Zelensky, Fico responds evasively. He claims that a new date and location are being arranged, and details will be announced later.
