The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which took place on May 6, 2023, was the largest event in the United Kingdom in 70 years. It involved 100 state leaders and millions of television viewers worldwide.
According to a British government report, the total cost of the ceremony was 72 million pounds (126 million Canadian dollars).
A modest ceremony
The Ministry of Culture, responsible for organizing the coronation, reported that 50.3 million pounds (88 million Canadian dollars) were allocated for the ceremony itself, and an additional 21.7 million pounds (38 million Canadian dollars) were spent on police security. In comparison to Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022, which cost 162 million pounds (284 million Canadian dollars), the coronation was significantly more modest.
The decision to reduce costs aimed to reflect modern times and consider the financial difficulties facing the kingdom.
The coronation attracted huge media interest worldwide. According to the Ministry of Culture, more than 100,000 articles were written about the event, and the broadcast was watched by 2 billion people in 125 countries.
A British government report emphasizes that despite its modest nature, the coronation was an event of enormous international significance.
