Israeli soldiers charged in severe abuse of Palestinian prisoner
The Israeli military prosecutor has charged five soldiers with the brutal abuse of a Palestinian prisoner at the Sde Teiman facility.
The indictment states that the accused subjected the detainee to a prolonged assault lasting 15 minutes, during which they kicked, trampled, and stood on him. They also struck him across the body with batons, dragged him along the ground, and used a stun gun, including on his head. The document further highlights that the prisoner was blindfolded and restrained, with both his hands and feet shackled at the time.
Brutality at the Sde Teiman facility
One of the accused soldiers allegedly struck the prisoner with a sharp object, causing severe internal injuries. An hour after the attack, guards transported the bleeding prisoner to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Among other injuries, doctors found seven broken ribs and a punctured lung.
The incident occurred on July 5, 2024. The arrest of the suspects sparked protests from right-wing demonstrators who stormed military bases. Among the protesters were far-right politicians opposing the actions of the military prosecutor.
Many Palestinians were held in the Sde Teiman camp in the Negev Desert after the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip. Human rights organizations have raised alarms about poor conditions in the detention centre and the violation of detainees' rights.
