Crunchy crust, soft interior, and simple, authentic taste await you in homemade flatbreads. This traditional treat is a nutritious dish and a journey through time. Prepare yourself for culinary memories and discover the simplicity of flavour that will delight everyone.

The smell of flatbreads baking in a tile oven is one of my earliest childhood memories. When my grandmother noticed we were running low on bread, she quickly prepared these fluffy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside cakes. The whole family would gather around the table, enjoying the taste of freshly baked flatbreads. My mother passed down the recipe for these wonderful flatbreads from our great-grandmother.

Flatbread – more than just bread

Although flatbread is today mainly associated with a snack, it was a staple food for our ancestors. Its preparation was simple, and the ingredients were easily accessible—flour, water, and salt. These three ingredients create a unique taste and aroma that transport us to the past.

Recipe for homemade flatbreads

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams of wheat flour,
  • 1 cup warm water,
  • a pinch of salt.

Method of preparation:

  1. Mixing ingredients: Sift the flour into a bowl and mix the warm water with salt. Then combine the dry and wet ingredients, kneading the dough until it reaches a smooth consistency.
  2. Resting the dough: Cover it with plastic wrap and rest for about 30 minutes.
  3. Forming the flatbreads: Divide the dough into smaller pieces and roll each into a thin cake.
  4. Frying: Heat a dry pan and fry the flatbreads until golden.

Flatbread – how to serve?

The finished flatbreads are delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with various toppings:

  • Classic: Butter – a simple yet delicious combination.
  • Sweet: Jam, preserves, or honey – an excellent option for those who love sweet flavours.
  • Savoury: Vegetable spreads, hummus, cottage cheese with chives – perfect for snacks and dinners.
  • Hot: Serve with goulash, bigos, or other meat dishes.

The simple recipe and quick preparation make flatbreads ideal for any occasion. Their versatility allows for serving with various toppings, ensuring they never get boring. Try this recipe, and flatbreads will become a staple in your culinary repertoire, delighting all household members and guests.
