The incident took place in the suburban area of Kyiv's Brovary. Around 2:40 PM Eastern Time, residents heard an explosion. Moments later, police and emergency services arrived on the scene.
Dramatic finale of a police operation
"According to preliminary information, two people were injured, including one police officer. Law enforcement officers and medical personnel are currently at the scene. Details of the incident are still being determined," Mayor Ihor Sapożko reported immediately after the incident.
Suspilne - the public broadcaster in Ukraine - emphasizes that no air raid alarm was announced in the region, and the explosion "probably was not related to Russian shelling."
Only later did the police in Brovary report that earlier in the evening, they had received a call about "hooligan acts" by an unknown man.
Threw a grenade at the policeman
"When the officers arrived at the given address, the man began to flee. A policeman chased after him. At that moment, the attacker threw a grenade towards the officer. As a result of the explosion, both the policeman and the perpetrator were injured," reads the statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
