Frozen hair contest turns heads in Yukon's chilly embrace
In Canada, an extraordinary competition attracts daredevils from all over the world: the frozen hair contest. It's impossible not to smile when we see the icy works of art adorning the heads of participants in this event.
For several years, contests for frozen hairstyles have been hugely popular in Whitehorse, Yukon. They take place from December to early March.
Frozen hair contest
Participants in this quirky competition dive into the hot springs at Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs in Yukon to create frosty masterpieces on their heads. The key condition is a temperature below -20°C. However, considering the strong northern winds in this region, the perceived temperatures are often much lower.
After emerging, the most intriguing hairstyles form on the head - spikes, waves, mohawks, curls - which freeze instantly. Participants also experience their eyelashes, eyebrows, beards, and mustaches freezing. The winner is the person whose frozen hair looks the most impressive, and cash prizes await the winners.
Yukon's winter attractions
In Yukon, one can also enjoy other winter attractions. Among them are swimming in icy lakes, dog sledding, and camping.
For those wishing to see the largest glaciers, sightseeing flights over Kluane National Park are ideal. This unforgettable experience allows you to admire majestic landscapes from a bird's eye view.
Yukon has a subarctic climate. The average temperature stays above 10°C for only four months of the year. The average temperature in July, the warmest month, is about 14°C. Long winters, starting as early as October and lasting until May, are very cold. Temperatures range from -20°C to even below -30°C.
