The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that a powerful explosion occurred at a petrochemical plant in the city of Sterlitamak in Bashkiria. A fire also engulfed one of the pipelines.

Sterlitamak is located over 930 miles east of Moscow. The explosion happened at the Sterlitamak Petrochemical Plant (SNKhZ).

According to accounts from residents of Sterlitamak, the first explosions were heard around 1 AM Eastern Time. Initially, a bang was heard near the pipelines, and then the fire appeared at the petrochemical plant.

The cause was the depressurization of the gas pipeline, which resulted in the burning of liquefied gas, reported the Ura portal.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed these reports. In a Telegram post, it was stated that three people were injured in the incident. Their condition is very serious.

On August 19, an explosion occurred on the SNKhZ product pipeline on Ufimski Street 4. According to preliminary information, three people are injured. All the city's emergency services are currently working at the scene, city authorities reported.

Firefighters and security service representatives are working on-site. The fire is difficult to control and has been burning for many hours.

On the overhead gas pipeline running along Ufimski Street, pressure dropped, leading to the burning of liquefied gas. Twenty specialists and six firefighting units are working on-site, reported the local department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Reuters reported that the plant produces rubber, high-octane fuel additives, and jet engine fuel.
