Danes propose humorous 'purchase' of California amid Trump's Greenland bid
The Danes humorously decided to respond to Donald Trump's intentions when he spoke about the USA's interest in acquiring Greenland. A petition has appeared online, inviting anyone who supports the idea of Denmark "buying" California to sign. A fundraising campaign has also been launched for this purpose.
"Have you ever looked at a map and wondered: what does Denmark need? More sun, palm trees, and rollerbladers. We have a unique opportunity to fulfill this dream" - wrote the authors of the petition, which has already been signed by over 200,000 people.
The document lists a number of "benefits" Denmark would gain from "buying" California, including better weather, secure avocado supplies, and technological dominance.
"Denmark will rename Disneyland to 'Hans Christian Andersenland'" - the authors mention in a satirical tone.
The petition assumes that after raising a trillion dollars, "give or take a few billion," negotiations will be conducted by "the best negotiators - Lego executives and the cast of the Danish series 'Borgen'.
Trump wants to take over Greenland
Donald Trump stated that Greenland, a territory under Danish dependency, should come under the control of the United States. He threatened to impose high tariffs on Denmark if the Copenhagen government did not agree to sell Greenland. Trump also did not rule out using force to achieve his "Arctic ambitions."
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, declared on Facebook that "Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, and their future and fight for independence is their own business". He also emphasized that Americans and Danes may have different opinions.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, stated to Danish TV2 that while Greenland’s aspirations for independence are understandable, she reiterated that "the island is not for sale."
