Caregiver's oversight nearly costs elderly woman $72,000 CAD
An elderly woman from the Treviso area in northern Italy nearly lost her savings. While tidying up, her caregiver discarded an old mattress on which her employer kept $72,000 CAD in cash and valuables. The carabinieri and Civil Protection were called to assist.
The newspaper "Il Messaggero" reported that the caregiver of the elderly woman from Montebelluna in the Veneto region came across an old, worn-out mattress while cleaning the garage of her employer's house. The caregiver took the mattress to a nearby landfill without informing the woman, who was not involved in the cleaning.
A decision that initially seemed logical led to unforeseen consequences. The elderly lady stored her life savings, credit cards, and family jewellery in the mattress—all valued at approximately CAD 72,000. The mattress's disappearance caused the elderly woman to panic, compelling her to immediately inform her daughter that the money and jewellery were missing.
Reaction of the carabinieri
The elderly lady's daughter quickly reported the situation to the carabinieri. Within minutes, the carabinieri, Civil Protection volunteers, and landfill staff began searching for the mattress. Eventually, it was found in a container for bulky waste, with its valuable contents intact, and they were returned to the owner.
