Biden steps down, Harris poised to lead democratic bid against Trump

There has been a political earthquake in the US. Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race for the White House. Vice President Kamala Harris is the probable new candidate for the Democratic Party. Her statement has appeared online.

Harris noted in her statement that she is "honoured to have the president's support" and now intends to earn the Democratic Party's nomination.

"There are 107 days left until the election. Together we will fight. And together we will win," reads Harris's statement, which appeared on the campaign website, not via the White House.

"I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party and our country to defeat Donald Trump," Harris emphasized.

After announcing his decision not to seek a second term, President Joe Biden stated on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET that he supports his Vice President Kamala Harris's candidacy in the November elections.

"In the coming days, the party will undertake a transparent and disciplined process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November," announced Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison.

Joe Biden announced on Sunday on platform X at 9:00 p.m. ET that he is withdrawing from the US presidential race. He will give an address to the nation explaining his decision and declaring that he will fulfill his duties until the end of his term.

"For now, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who worked so hard to get me re-elected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work. I also want to express my sincere appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me," he wrote.

"I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing America can't do — if we do it together. We just need to remember that we are the United States of America," the current president concluded.
