Travelling by airplane can be stressful, especially during one’s first flight. This was experienced by a passenger of Air China, who, during a flight from Quzhou to Chengdu on July 4, caused chaos onboard by accidentally opening the emergency door, thinking it was the entrance to the restroom.
The incident had serious consequences. The passenger’s mistake caused the emergency slide to automatically deploy, forcing the crew to evacuate all passengers and cancel the flight.
The plane required the intervention of appropriate services and had to be prepared for takeoff again. Passengers were accommodated in a hotel at the expense of the airline.
Witnesses report that the crew was busy resolving another incident on board, which may have contributed to the lack of attention. One of the passengers describes how around 9 PM Eastern Time, a woman, looking for the restroom, accidentally opened the emergency door.
There was no sound when the slide opened. After the incident, a delay was announced, and then the flight was cancelled. Air China took us to a hotel to rest – says one of the travellers.

The passenger who opened the door may face a fine of over $25,000 for causing the flight delay. Additionally, she may be subject to administrative detention and a travel ban. The police arrived immediately on the scene to question the woman.
Not everyone agrees with this way of resolving the matter. There have been questions online about the plane’s construction, suggesting that emergency doors should not open so easily.
