Zelensky challenges Rubio: Witness Russian aggression firsthand
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, invited the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to visit Ukraine so he could personally witness the effects of Russian aggression. The invitation was a response to Rubio's suggestions about the necessity of concessions to achieve peace.
President Zelensky stressed that Ukraine's historical heritage, damaged by Russian attacks, will never fully return to its original state. While restoration is possible, he acknowledged that it will not be the same as before. He also asserted that Russia should be held financially accountable for the destruction.
In mid-January, Marco Rubio presented his vision of diplomacy in the Senate, emphasizing that the war must end. "Now, what Vladimir Putin's done is unacceptable, there's no doubt about it. But this war has to end," Rubio said. He noted that this would require "bold diplomacy" and concessions from both sides.
"Ukraine has been set back 100 years"
Rubio expressed the opinion that the previous U.S. administration was misleading in suggesting that Ukraine could not only defeat but also destroy Russia. He said Ukraine had been set back 100 years, emphasizing the ongoing destruction of the country's energy system.
In response to these remarks, Zelensky invited Rubio to visit Ukraine to see the effects of Russian aggression firsthand. I think he needs to see what Russia has done," the Ukrainian president said in an interview with the Associated Press.
Zelensky's invitation is not just a diplomatic gesture but also an attempt to draw attention to Ukraine's real challenges. He emphasizes that rebuilding the country will require massive financial resources and international support.
