In February, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) disclosed that since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Russian military had faced the loss of over 3,000 tanks and 5,600 armoured vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles.

The total losses in 2023 amounted to around 1,120 tanks, approximately 2,000 armoured vehicles, and infantry fighting vehicles. These figures are lower than in previous years, which experts attribute to the changing dynamics on the battlefield and strategies employed by the conflicting parties.

A report mentioned, "Moscow could potentially withstand about three more years of intense losses and replenish its tank reserves from stock, despite them being of a lower technical standard, independent of its capacity for new production."

The reputable expert Jarosław Wolski has taken a closer look at the situation and is known for his reliance on solid data over propaganda.

Wolski presented the figures. They are concerning for NATO

Incorporating lessons from other conflicts, Wolski believes Russian tank losses could be about 20% higher.

However, this is where the positive news ends because, despite these significant losses, the situation for Russia in terms of tanks is far from dire. They have considerable reserves and have maintained steady production. Wolski estimates this at 400 to 600 new tanks per year.
Contrastingly, NATO countries can only contribute an extra 200-300 tanks.
