USS Preble, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, is the first ship in the U.S. fleet equipped with the HELIOS system. This modern laser weapon combines the ability to destroy targets and disrupt enemy systems. HELIOS is a solution developed by Lockheed Martin and is part of the U.S. Navy's strategy for integrating advanced energy technologies.

HELIOS: A breakthrough in defense technology

HELIOS, which stands for High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance, is a system that offers both 'hard kill' and 'soft kill' capabilities. This means it can physically destroy targets ("hard kill") and disrupt their operation ("soft kill"). According to the Bulgarian Military portal, this system is particularly effective against drones, small boats, and potentially incoming missiles.

The history of the HELIOS system development began in 2018 with a contract worth $150 million with Lockheed Martin. The system underwent crucial tests in 2020, and its integration on USS Preble began in 2021. HELIOS operates at a power of 60 kW but can be scaled up to 120 kW, providing flexibility in various operational scenarios.

Global competition in laser weaponry

It's not just the U.S. investing in laser weaponry. The UK is developing its DragonFire system, and Israel is working on the Iron Beam. China, Russia, Germany, and other countries are also engaged in the development of this technology. Each of these nations has its unique approach and strategic goals.

The UK has accelerated the development of DragonFire, planning its completion by 2027. Israel, with U.S. assistance, is developing Iron Beam, intended to be a cheaper alternative to traditional missile defence systems. Additionally, China claims to have developed a laser system capable of continuous operation due to an innovative cooling system.

It should be noted that the USS Preble is an Arleigh Burke-class ship, which measures 155 metres in length and has a displacement of about 10,100 tonnes. It reaches speeds of nearly 60 km/h and is equipped with a range of navigational and reconnaissance radars. The armament of this unit includes a 127 mm gun, a 20 mm Phalanx CIWS system, 25 mm machine guns, and the aforementioned HELIOS laser.
