Ukraine poised to replace Russia as Syria's wheat supplier
Russian wheat deliveries to Syria have been halted due to political uncertainty and payment delays. Ukraine has already expressed its willingness to supply Syria with grain.
According to Reuters, two ships carrying a total of approximately 32,659 metric tonnes of Russian wheat did not arrive in Syria. A Russian source close to the Kremlin stated that deliveries were halted due to exporters' concerns following the change of government in Damascus.
- I think no one would dare supply wheat to Syria under the current circumstances - said a Russian informant wishing to remain anonymous.
Russia, the world's largest wheat exporter, had been supplying grain to Syria while circumventing Western sanctions imposed on both countries.
No deliveries from Russia. Ukraine offers help to Syria
In the wake of the suspension of Russian supplies, Ukraine has expressed its willingness to supply Syria with grain.
- Where it is difficult, we have to be there with our food. We are open to supplying our food and if Syria needs food — then we are there - said Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Vitaliy Koval.
Kyiv has long exported wheat and corn to Middle Eastern countries, with the exception of Syria. The ousted Assad regime was buying Russian grain.
