U.S. defense ramps up AI push with new Pentagon initiative
The United States Department of Defense has announced the creation of a new office dedicated to adapting artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the military. Its goal is to "integrate" autonomous weapons into the army's ranks as quickly as possible.
On Wednesday, December 11, the Pentagon announced the establishment of a new office tasked with implementing artificial intelligence technology in military systems. The United States Department of Defense aims to radically increase the pace of development of autonomous weapons, reports thehill.com.
The United States intends to "integrate" thousands of AI-powered autonomous drones into the army as part of the Replicator initiative. Another project involves the development of defence systems against such devices.
Washington will spare no expense on research, emphasizing that if such solutions fall into the hands of Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea, it would pose a serious threat to national security.
Millions of dollars for the weapons of the future
The Pentagon, as mentioned, will allocate 100 million US dollars (140 million Canadian dollars) for work on the implementation of AI technology in the military for 2024 and 2025. For now, these are experiments. The Department of Defense also plans to collaborate on this issue with small companies, to which it will allocate another 40 million dollars (56 million Canadian dollars).
The work is focused not only on creating autonomous weapons but also on tools that will improve the efficiency of military operations.
