Trump's controversial renaming: The Gulf of America emerges
In line with a recent executive order by President Donald Trump, changes are already being announced in the United States. The Gulf of Mexico has been renamed the Gulf of America.
In the United States, the Gulf of Mexico has been renamed the Gulf of America. "As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," announced the Interior Department.
As Reuters notes, the name change of the Gulf of Mexico is unlikely to gain international recognition. Mexico, which borders the gulf alongside the United States, stated that the internationally recognized name has been used in maritime navigation for centuries, points out NEXTA.
Previously, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum jokingly suggested renaming a part of North America based on how it appeared on maps from the year 1607. "Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, no?," said Sheinbaum.
It's worth recalling that Trump announced he would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America because that name is "appropriate".
