The team of special prosecutor Jack Smith has submitted requests to withdraw federal charges against Donald Trump.
These charges relate to attempts to remain in power and retain classified documents. The prosecution cited a legal opinion from the Department of Justice stating that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted.
As the investigators wrote, although they still believe in Trump's guilt, this ban is "categorical" and does not depend on the alleged crimes' seriousness or the evidence's strength.
- Today's decision by the Department of Justice ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump and is a major victory for the rule of law, - commented Trump's team spokesperson, Steven Cheung.
Court cases involving Trump
The charges against Trump concerned two cases. He was accused of attempting to remain in power despite a lack of evidence of electoral fraud in Washington. In Florida, he was accused of violating the Espionage Act by retaining national defense documents.
Despite the withdrawal of federal charges, Trump is still charged in two state cases.
In New York, he was found guilty of crimes related to concealing payment for Stormy Daniels' silence, and in Georgia, he was accused of attempting to change the election results.
