Trump envoy delays Ukraine trip until post-inauguration
General Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump's envoy for Ukraine and Russia, has postponed his trip to Kyiv. It will occur only after the inauguration of the new U.S. president.
The change in the timing of Gen. Kellogg's visit to Ukraine is reported by Reuters, citing its own sources.
"Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who is set to serve as Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, originally planned to visit Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian authorities in early January (...). His team was also organizing meetings with officials in other European capitals, including Rome and Paris," the agency reported.
Kellogg is expected to visit Kyiv only after Trump takes office, although no date has been set yet, Reuters added. No reasons were given for the change in Gen. Kellogg's plans.
He is to fulfill Trump's promise
Kellogg, who served in various advisory roles to Trump during his first term, is slated to be the chief official responsible for fulfilling the president-elect's promise to end the war in Ukraine.
In discussions, the American military advocated for freezing the conflict, at least temporarily excluding Ukraine's NATO membership, while offering security guarantees. However, Kellogg noted that this is not Trump's plan and that the president-elect makes the final decisions.
The former and future president, who repeatedly claimed during the election campaign that he could easily bring the war to an end—within a day or even before formally taking office—admitted in December that it might be challenging. After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he stated that Kyiv is ready to make peace and called on Vladimir Putin to "take action."
