Tangerines: The seasonal citrus powerhouse with hidden health perks

Tangerines are closely associated with the holiday season, and their fresh aroma can instantly lift your mood. We often enjoy them during this time of year, but it’s important to remember one key fact to maximise their health benefits.

Tangerines are not only a tasty snack but also a treasure trove of nutrients. They contain significant amounts of vitamin C, which is essential for boosting the immune system, especially during the winter months. These fruits also provide B vitamins, which support the nervous system, and vitamin A, necessary for eye and skin health.

Potassium and magnesium are just the beginning

In addition to vitamins, tangerines are rich in minerals such as potassium and magnesium. Potassium helps regulate blood pressure, while magnesium enhances muscle function and reduces stress. Additionally, they are a good source of fibre, which aids digestion, promotes a long-lasting feeling of fullness, and helps maintain a healthy weight.

They may prevent cancer

Moreover, many nutrients are not just in the flesh of these fruits but also in the white peel surrounding it. Peeling citrus fruits thoroughly may actually reduce their health benefits. The albedo, or white peel, is packed with nutrients and aids in the absorption of vitamin C. It is also high in pectin, which helps regulate "bad" cholesterol levels, and flavonoids with antioxidant properties. Recently, there has been increasing discussion about another component in the white peel: d-glucarate. Research suggests it may be linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
