Syria in celebration: Rebels claim victory over Assad regime
The news of the probable overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in many cities in Syria has brought joy. People are gathering in the streets to celebrate the end of the dictator's rule. Just a few hours earlier, when rebels were taking over more territories, these same streets were deserted. Assad's forces offered no resistance.
Syrian rebels announced on Sunday in a televised statement the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad after a 24-year reign. They later reported that they are working on transferring power to a transitional body that will have full executive power.
This information sparked euphoria in many locations. Celebrations are ongoing, including in the centre of Damascus, which has been taken over by the rebels. Syrian refugees are also celebrating outside their homeland.
Opponents of Assad reported the capture of Damascus without encountering resistance from government forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the government army is withdrawing from Damascus airport. Reuters and CNN have reported on the fighting in the city.
Overthrow in Syria: People are toppling monuments
Earlier, there were reports that Bashar al-Assad left the country's capital on a plane that flew in an unknown direction.
There have also been recordings online showing the moment of the toppling of a monument of Hafez al-Assad, the previous president of Syria and father of Bashar al-Assad.
