Sweden sets up special zones to counter rising gang violence

Swedish authorities are declaring war on numerous gangs operating in Stockholm and other cities. The first special security zone was established in Norrköping (the southern part of the country). It was in that district where two men were recently shot.

Just a few years ago, Sweden was considered a very safe country. Today, however, it has a problem with organized crime. There are many examples of gang activities.

On April 11, two teenagers murdered a Pole living in Sweden, and on Monday (03/06) in the infamous Hageby district (city of Norrköping), two men were killed. Police believe it was a contract killing.

The authorities in Stockholm have decided to fight the gangs which are beginning to terrorize society in Sweden. At the end of April, the government introduced so-called security zones into legal circulation.

This is an area where the police have the right to search a car, frisk individuals, or search homes without suspicion of a crime taking place. Security zones can be established for two weeks, and the police request their establishment.

Police have established the first security zone in Sweden's history in the city of Norrköping. In a police statement, the zone is intended to improve safety and make it more difficult for criminals to prepare for serious crimes.

The Swedish government and law enforcement agencies hope this will help improve the effectiveness of the fight against gangs. The solution, however, raises concerns among human rights organizations and the Swedish opposition. Opponents of the zones argue that they have racist undertones.
