SpaceX collaborates with U.S. military to curb Russian Starlink use

Russia will not use Starlink technology. SpaceX has partnered with the U.S. military to block the unauthorized use of satellite terminals. However, this solution may not be entirely effective.

Starlink is an innovative project SpaceX developed to provide satellite internet access worldwide. Satellites that orbit the Earth and terminals that receive the signal play a vital role in this endeavour. This solution works effectively in many areas worldwide that lack traditional network infrastructure.

In early 2022, SpaceX activated the Starlink service in Ukraine. This proved invaluable for troops on the front lines, as it enables fast communication and data transmission over long distances—extremely important on the modern battlefield.

In early 2024, it was revealed that Russian troops were also using these terminals. The restrictions were ineffective because the equipment was purchased through intermediaries, and payments were made with foreign cards. According to announcements, steps have been taken to mitigate such situations.

SpaceX blocks Russian terminals

Amanda Dory from the Pentagon confirmed that SpaceX actively cooperates with the U.S. military to block unauthorized satellite communication terminals. However, the operation's details were not disclosed.

The scale of unauthorized equipment use was significant. According to the Pentagon representative, about one in a hundred terminals in Ukraine were considered unauthorized, likely referring to temporarily occupied territories.

The problem cannot be completely eliminated

The problem cannot be eliminated with standard methods. Dory emphasized that the Pentagon knows Russians are adapting and will likely seek new ways to access advanced communication tools. After blocking one device, it is simply a matter of purchasing another.

Experts suggest that a better solution would be to create a list of Ukrainian terminals allowed to operate within the country. Blocking all other devices would prevent Russians from unauthorized using the technology.
