There's a boom in reviving iconic productions. We have already seen the premiere of "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice," the follow-up to "Beetlejuice." Starting November 15 at 10:00 a.m. EST, you can watch the new edition of the legendary "Gladiator" in Canadian cinemas. Seeking a production to refresh, Prime Video is turning to the "Tomb Raider" series. A new actress will take the lead, and her name is being reported by almost all industry portals.
Who will play the new Lara Croft?
Sophie Turner, a 28-year-old Emmy-nominated actress known for her role as Sansa Stark in "Game of Thrones," is in negotiations to take on the role of Lara Croft in the new "Tomb Raider" series from Prime Video.
According to Deadline's reports, Turner was one of the actresses considered for the iconic archaeologist and adventurer role alongside Lucy Boynton. It now seems that Turner will take the lead role in Amazon's production.
The series is being created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for "Fleabag," who delivered the first script a few months ago. Prime Video ordered the series in May after signing a three-year, CAD 80 million contract with Waller-Bridge.
The new production will follow the adventures of the world-renowned archaeologist Lara Croft, based on the popular "Tomb Raider" game series that debuted in 1996. Amazon struck a deal with Crystal Dynamics, the publisher owning the brand rights, which also includes potential film projects.
Crystal Dynamics and Amazon are also working on a new game in the series, though details are not yet known. Waller-Bridge expressed her excitement about the project, saying, "If I could tell my teenage self that this is happening, I think she would lose her mind. 'Tomb Raider' is a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to bring it to a series with such amazing collaborators."
Lara Croft was previously portrayed on the big screen by Angelina Jolie in the films from 2001 and 2003 and by Alicia Vikander in 2018. Despite mixed box office results, the character remains one of the most recognizable in pop culture. The first film grossed CAD 370 million in theatres. The second only brought in CAD 210 million. Vikander breathed new life into the series, and "Tomb Raider" earned roughly the same as the first film - over CAD 365 million.
