Zaporizhzhia—one of Ukraine's three main industrial centres—is crucial for the country's economy and functioning. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, more than 700,000 people lived in Zaporizhzhia.
It is not yet clear when the attack on Zaporizhzhia, located 31 kilometres from the front line, might occur. According to The Economist, this main city of the Zaporizhzhia region remains partially under Russian occupation.
In preparation for a possible Russian offensive, Ukrainians are strengthening their defence around the city. Fortifications, new minefields, and concrete and iron constructions are being created.
At the end of 2022, Vladimir Putin announced annexing the entire Zaporizhzhia region, which his forces controlled one-third of.
