More and more residents of Russia are turning to pharmacological means to combat depression, with sales reaching a record level.
According to the "Kommersant" portal, the increase in demand for these drugs is related to political events, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Cultural norms are also changing, and more people are becoming aware of mental health issues and the need to seek professional help in such situations.
The increase in demand for antidepressants in Russia: No prospects
The growing demand for antidepressants is confirmed by the Centre for Advanced Technology Development. After the invasion of Ukraine, sales of these substances tripled within the first month.
The increased demand for antidepressants in Russia is associated with problems in their availability. As noted by Nikolai Bespalov, director of one of the Russian pharmaceutical companies, patients have difficulties purchasing certain medications.
Approximately 15 million Russians suffer from severe depression, representing over 10 percent of the Russian population. The most common causes of poor mental health in society include prolonged illness or the death of a loved one, domestic violence, and high debts; however, the political situation also affects mental well-being.
These conclusions were reached by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) during a long-term study that included about 40,000 people. As stated by Svetlana Chupsheva, the general director of ASI, many people struggle with depression and loneliness. This is a global challenge today, affecting not only Russia.
