Rcriticizes Moldova's language shift towards Romania
In a mocking tone, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman commented on the course of the Moldovan government, which is focusing on integration with the West. Maria Zakharova stated that Chișinău is conducting an "anti-Moldovan policy," and the citizens of Moldova have been "turned into Romanians." She was referring to the change in the official language adopted by the Moldovan parliament.
Many pieces of information provided by Russian media or government representatives are elements of propaganda. Such reports are part of the information warfare conducted by the Russian Federation.
In an interview with Russian state television, Zakharova, in a propagandistic style, suggested that the changes being implemented in Moldova are happening against the will of the majority of the country's citizens.
– The regime in Chișinău is not everything. First and foremost, it is the people, Moldovans, who in recent years have been turned into Romanians – said Zakharova.
– (The citizens of Moldova - ed.) have been deprived of their native language in the most perverse way imaginable, by changing the very name of the language – she added.
Moldova changes official language, Russia outraged
The law that changes the wording "Moldovan language" to "Romanian language" in all of the country's legal texts and regulations, including the constitution, was adopted by the Moldovan parliament in March 2023.
The Romanian and Moldovan languages are very close to each other. In Romania, Moldovan speech is commonly considered one of the dialects of the Romanian language, not a separate language. For this reason, it does not have official status.
The change was not well received in Moscow. – This raises questions about Moldova's territorial integrity – commented at the time, the spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.
