Prepare your lawn for winter: Top tips for a lush spring

Fall is a critical time for proper lawn care. Preparing the grass for the approaching cold allows you to enjoy a beautiful, healthy lawn in spring. You don't always need to buy store-bought fertilizers, as you might already have an excellent conditioner at home.

Getting your lawn ready for winter is essential for its health and appearance in the spring. A lawn without proper care might struggle to regenerate, leading to uneven growth, bare patches, and diseases. Taking care of the grass in the fall helps strengthen its root system, ensuring better survival during low temperatures.

Here's how to prepare your lawn for winter

Mowing the lawn before winter arrives is one of the most important tasks for every gardener. The last mowing should take place in October or early November when there's no risk of frost. The optimal cutting height is about 5 centimetres. Cutting the grass shorter may lead to freezing, while cutting it longer increases the risk of it rotting under the snow.

It's also important to remember proper fertilization before winter. Nitrogen-based fertilizers, popular in spring and summer, are not suitable for fall. Fall fertilizers should be rich in phosphorus and potassium. Using inappropriate fertilizers can weaken the lawn and make it more susceptible to diseases. In the fall, it's also wise to consider scarification and aeration of the soil before the frost sets in. This will allow for better air circulation and nutrient delivery to the grass roots. Consider covering your lawn with a thin layer of compost or peat. This natural "blanket" will serve as additional protection against freezing.

Use ash. The grass will be unbreakable

That's not all. A great solution is to use wood ash. It's rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium—nutrients that the lawn will thank you for. The most important thing is to choose ash from the fireplace or grill that is free of chemicals. Sprinkle it on the lawn on a clear day, so the rain doesn't wash away this natural fertilizer. The best time for this treatment is the end of October.

Preparing your lawn for winter is not just a matter of aesthetics but also, above all, plant health. Regular mowing, aeration, proper fertilization, and leaf removal are basic activities that every garden owner should perform. Taking care of these aspects will ensure a beautiful, green lawn in spring. Remember that even small neglect can have serious consequences for the lawn's condition, so it's worth spending time on proper preparations now.
