Pope Francis criticizes Trump's immigration plan, promotes peace
Pope Francis has criticized Donald Trump's plans regarding the deportation of immigrants from the USA, describing them as a "disgrace." He also emphasized that the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the two-state formula. Additionally, he announced the appointment of a woman to the position of Governor of the Vatican City State.
Donald Trump is set to take office as President of the United States on Monday. He has consistently reiterated, even shortly before his inauguration, that he "will launch the largest immigrant deportation operation in the country's history." His aim is to close the southern border with Mexico, deport immigrants and criminals, including cartels and street gangs.
During an interview on Nove television, Pope Francis expressed his concerns about President-elect Donald Trump's plans to deport illegal immigrants from the USA.
If it is true, it will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing to pay the unpaid bill. It won’t do, said Pope Francis. "This is not the way to solve things," he added.
During the discussion, the Pope touched on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stressing that the two-state solution is the only viable path forward. He noted that while some parties express willingness, others remain hesitant, highlighting the need for persuasive and diplomatic dialogue. The Pope further remarked that achieving peace demands courage and may entail sacrifices but ultimately yields greater long-term benefits.
Pope Francis addressed the Holocaust, expressing deep sorrow and regret over the tragedy, describing it as both a disgrace and a profound source of human suffering. Turning to modern developments, he announced the historic appointment of Sister Raffaella Petrini as Governor of the Vatican City State. This significant role, the highest administrative office in the Vatican, oversees the governance of the state on behalf of the Pope.
During the interview, the Pope also emphasized the importance of closeness and respect towards all people, including transgender individuals. "The word is closeness, closeness with everyone, everyone," he stressed.
At the end of the conversation, Pope Francis shared an anecdote from the moment when the cardinals chose him as the Pope. "They [the Cardinals] are crazy, but let God do what he wants!" he recalled as his first thought after being elected. He also reflected on his initial misstep immediately following the conclave, referring to it as his first error as Pope.
