Pickled red onion: The secret to elevate your herring salad
There are various ways to prepare herring salad. One of the more popular versions includes beets. However, you can get creative and try adding an unconventional ingredient next time. Unfortunately, this ingredient usually doesn't appear in the classic recipe, significantly enhancing the salad's flavour.
Herring is a type of fish often served at parties in various forms. One popular, impressive, yet simple recipe involves a salad with beets. I enjoy this version but also like experimenting with alternatives. There's one simple method that I particularly favour.
What does this trick involve? It's not complicated; it simply involves using pickled red onion. Vegetables dipped in a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water, salt, and sugar add character and a unique taste to the salad. You may soon discover this yourself: herring and pickles are a perfect match.
The recipe is straightforward and, apart from using pickled onion, doesn't include anything particularly innovative. It's also worth highlighting the presence of an apple – another ingredient that, in my opinion, is indispensable in this recipe.
Herring salad with beets and pickled onions
Ingredients:
- about 400 grams of herring fillets,
- 2 medium-sized beets,
- 3 eggs,
- pickled red onion (approximately ½ a head),
- 2 pickles,
- 1 apple,
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise,
- 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt,
- 1 tablespoon mustard,
- chives,
- salt,
- pepper.
Preparation:
- Bake the beets in foil (about 70 minutes at 200°C), cool, gently peel, and cut into cubes.
- Cut the herring into the same-sized pieces (if they are salted, you may need to soak them in cold water first).
- Also, cut the hard-boiled eggs and chop the pickles and apples a little finer.
- Transfer everything into a bowl, add some pickled red onion, chopped chives, mayonnaise, and Greek yogurt.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Put it in the fridge – this salad tastes cold and needs some time to blend the flavours.
