Orchids are a common decorative element in many Canadian homes and enjoy enduring popularity. They can even be bought at reasonable prices in supermarkets.

To enjoy the beauty of orchids for a long time, you need to provide them with appropriate conditions and care for them regularly. They should be placed in areas with diffused light—direct sunlight, such as on a south-facing windowsill, is harmful to them. They also need protection from drafts, which can damage their condition.

Orchid care product you can find at the pharmacy

If you notice that orchids are not blooming as they usually do or that their leaves are losing colour intensity, a suitable method might be to use hydrogen peroxide, a product available in every pharmacy.

Hydrogen peroxide is effective in combating fungal and bacterial diseases attacking orchids. It is particularly helpful during repotting when traces of pests appear on the roots or you can see the beginnings of rot. It's best to use a three-per cent solution.

As a preventive measure, during repotting, it's worth spraying the orchid roots with diluted hydrogen peroxide using an atomizer before placing them back into a new pot.

This is how you save an orchid: A simple recipe

If orchids bloom poorly, don't grow, or their leaves lose colour, you can prepare a special watering solution. Mix hydrogen peroxide with water in a ratio of 1 to 4, and water the orchids with this solution every two weeks. They should soon start to bloom vigorously.

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective alternative to expensive flower fertilizers. It's easily accessible and costs around $1, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of orchids for longer.
