- Thick clouds of smoke and steam have been rising for many days over the Amazon rainforest, known as the "lungs of the world." Since the beginning of August, over 18,000 fire outbreaks have been recorded here — 90 percent more than in the same period last year. The vast majority of these are deliberate arson.
- Serbia is also battling fires, with 200 recorded in the last 24 hours, reported by the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs. A state of emergency has been declared in part of the country.
- An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was recorded on Monday before 4:00 PM ET in Greece. Its epicentre was near the island of Euboea, east of Athens. The tremor was also felt in the capital city.
- Emmanuel Macron will not appoint Lucie Castets, the left-wing New People's Front (NFP) candidate, as the new prime minister, informed the Élysée Palace in a statement. The President of France concluded consultations with political party leaders on Monday.
- The Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs confirmed earlier media reports about the arrest of a person in Belgrade suspected of espionage for neighbouring Croatia. Commenting on the Monday statement by the Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs, Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman admitted that "he has no knowledge of this." "We are in contact with our embassy in Belgrade. Everything we know, we know from the media," he added.
