Omelette or oatmeal? The breakfast duel that fuels your day

How often can you eat oatmeal for breakfast each week? Although it warms you up nicely and provides the body with many valuable nutrients, it can simply become boring. That's why sometimes it's worth swapping it for an equally nutritious breakfast that will sustain you for the whole morning. I recommend an omelette – it does contain less fibre than oatmeal, but it ensures a good supply of protein.

In my autumn breakfast menu, omelettes definitely reign supreme. I love them because they go great with almost any topping. If I feel like fresh vegetables, I add arugula and cherry tomatoes. Sometimes, I'll throw in blue cheese, pear, and walnuts. Other times I eat it with homemade cherry jam. Recently, I tried a recipe for an omelette with sausage, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Omelette vs. Oatmeal

I'm convinced there are fans of both dishes. I like to alternate between the two because I'm not a fan of monotony. However, it's good to know that both the omelette and the oatmeal have their strengths and weaknesses.

An omelette contains a high amount of protein, which is necessary for building muscles. It is easy to prepare, can be served with various toppings, and keeps hunger at bay for a long time. Unfortunately, it also contains a high amount of fat and a low amount of fibre – unless you add fibre-rich ingredients.

On the other hand, oatmeal is rich in fibre, which improves intestinal function and provides a feeling of fullness. Different add-ins, such as fruits or nuts, can enrich it with valuable vitamins and minerals. However, it's hard to make oatmeal with more protein unless you add a sports mix.

How to make a fluffy omelette?

I've tried various omelette recipes. I separated egg whites and yolks, but it turned out that the secret to a successful breakfast isn't there. It's about beating the eggs into a fluffy and thick mixture. If they are too aerated, the omelette will rise only momentarily and then quickly drop. A well-heated frying pan with a stable temperature, preferably with a thick bottom, is also important.

Omelette recipe with sausage, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes

Ingredients:

  • 60 g sausage,
  • 30 g onion,
  • a handful of spinach,
  • 3 eggs,
  • 30 mL 18% cream,
  • salt,
  • pepper,
  • 1 tbsp olive oil,
  • 4 sun-dried tomatoes in oil.

How to make a hearty omelette for a chilly morning step by step?

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan, add finely chopped onion and diced sausage.
  2. Beat the eggs in a bowl with a mixer. At the end of the beating, add cream, a pinch of salt, and pepper.
  3. Add spinach to the pan's ingredients. Once it softens, pour in the egg mixture. Top with the sliced sun-dried tomatoes.
  4. Cover with a lid and fry until the omelette is golden. Eat with fresh add-ons like cherry tomatoes and arugula. You can sprinkle it with chives or parsley.
