Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian armed forces have destroyed one-quarter of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, including the flagship cruiser "Moskva," – the British Ministry of Defence reported.
In its latest intelligence report, the British Ministry of Defence stated that the Ukrainian army's continuous attacks forced the Russian fleet to move its units from the historic port of Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, located in the eastern part of the Black Sea.
Despite the losses, the Black Sea Fleet actively supports the ground operations of the Russian forces by launching various types of missiles, as the Ministry of Defence informed.
The Black Sea Fleet loses significantly in the war
Let us recall that in April 2022, the fleet's flagship vessel, the missile cruiser "Moskva," sank in the Black Sea. The ship was hit by two Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles, leading to explosions and a fire on board.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, attacking from the north, east, and south, attempting unsuccessfully to capture Kyiv. In April of that same year, Russian troops were pushed out of northern Ukraine, including the Kyiv region.
In the autumn counteroffensive, Ukrainian forces regained parts of the territory occupied in the south and east of the country, including the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions. However, the counteroffensive initiated in June 2023 did not yield significant successes.
Currently, the war is positional, with fighting concentrated in selected areas of Donbas, the Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. These areas are likely to be the main topics of any potential peace talks.
